use and care

prewash

all products

  • all products should be prewashed to ensure the bamboo fibres are prepared perfectly for their nappy duties
  • Prewash at 60°at least 5 times to increase absorbency
  • It is not necessary to dry flat nappies between washes.
  • Prefold nappies are best prewashed and dried between each wash. This allows the fibres of the inner layer to fluff up and become more absorben
  • Line drying is best for our environment.

changing baby

  • Remove the dirty nappy and place into a dry lidded bucket/pail.
  • Clean baby’s bum. We recommend using plain water and cloth wipes. Disposable wipes can be full of chemicals which can be very harsh on sensitive skin. Simply keep a small container in your change area that can be refilled as necessary.
  • During winter months you can keep a thermos of warm water for use in your change area
  • Ensure baby’s bum is nice and dry and put on a clean nappy.
  • Please avoid the use of any creams. They can lead to a breakdown of the absorbency capacity of your nappies.
  • Saturating the nappy before dry pailing can assist to dilute the waste in the nappy which offers protection to the nappy fibres. However, it is not a necessity.

collection

  • Bumboo recommends Dry Pailing. Simply place soiled nappies into a dry lidded bucket.
  • No soaking or chemicalsrequired.
  • Attach a piece of fabric inside your nappy bucket lid with a few drops of essential oil (eucalyptus, lavender or tea tree are naturally deodorising) to keep away odours.
  • To keep nappy buckets fresh and sanitised, use two buckets – rotating them so that one is in use and the other airing in sunshine.

washing

remove the poops

  • Don’t worry to much about removing breastfed poops – they are water soluable so nappies can be placed directly into the washing machine. An extra rinse cycle each week will help to keep your nappies and machine poop free!
  • The ultimate poop removing assistant is a Toilet Spray Gun – affectionately known as a Lil Squirt. These can be purchased from local hardware stores and attached to your toilet (no plumber required). Simply spray the nappy waste into the toilet and flush away.
  • Alternatively use of a spatula and hanging nappy in the flush of the toilet will also work well.
  • Biodegradable liners are a handy item which can make nappy cleaning simplified, as you simply remove the liner and flush it in the toilet. However, liners are not very effective with newborn poops.

wash the nappies

  • Use a non-bio washing powder.
  • To keep the bamboo fibres at their ultimate performance and to be kind to our environment please avoid washing agents that contain brighteners, enzymes, phosphates, conditioners, fragrance or essential oils.
  • Bumboo recommends ecostore, Seventh Generation and Planet Ark Powder detergents.
  • Use half the amount of washing powder that you would normally use for the washing size load you are doing.
  • Giving the nappies a pre-rinse cold cycle will help to keep them fresh, free of stains and residual products.
  • We recommend cold washing your nappies, but any temperate up to 60° is fine.
  • Bumboo recommends giving your nappies a post rinse once a week.
  • Please do not soak or use other agents such as fabric softeners, bleach or nappy whiteners as the chemicals in these products will destroy bamboo’s unique qualities, and may lead to nappy rash on your baby.

drying

  • Sun! The ultraviolet rays from sunlight will remove stains and give your nappies a natural antibacterial and antifungal treatment.
  • Bumboo recommends line drying as this is kindest on our environment and best for the life span of your nappies.
  • A couple of minutes in the tumble dryer on low will not harm your nappies and will make your nappies extra soft and fluffy.
